Testosterone Levels and Self-Determinism: How Hormones Shape Masculinity and Willpower in Men
By Joshua G. Crampton
Where Are All the Long Hair and Beards?
A friend and I were recently discussing the modern dating scene when she mentioned something peculiar: in cities like Houston, Los Angeles, Denver, and even San Francisco, she’s noticed fewer men sporting facial hair or long hair. Whether this observation reflects a real trend or just her imagination, it got me thinking about how these features—especially beards—are often associated with masculinity.
Interestingly, one of the concerns women have when undergoing testosterone therapy is the potential for increased facial or body hair growth, or even voice deepening. Ironically, these are the exact traits we aim to stimulate in our male patients!
This leads us to today’s topic: Self-Determinism, Willpower, and Testosterone. You might wonder, “What does facial hair have to do with willpower or self-determinism?” Let’s dive in.
How Testosterone Shapes the Human Experience
Testosterone doesn’t just influence the body; it profoundly affects the mind. A decrease or imbalance in testosterone impacts multiple dimensions of a man’s life, both physically and psychologically. Low testosterone levels can lead to diminished physical vitality, reduced sense of authority, loss of purpose, and even weakened willpower.
In contrast, when testosterone—and other foundational hormones—are balanced and optimized, men often report a renewed sense of being. They regain energy, focus, and drive. They feel empowered to move forward in their goals and life’s ambitions.
It’s no surprise that men with low testosterone often struggle with symptoms of depression. Many of the patients we treat come to us after being prescribed antidepressants, yet they find their emotional health improves dramatically once their hormones are balanced. It’s not just about addressing the mental symptoms but tackling the root cause—hormonal imbalance.
The Two Phases of Hormone Therapy
At MultiGen Wellness, we approach hormone therapy in two key phases:
Phase 1: Balancing
This foundational phase begins with thorough baseline testing to assess your current hormonal levels. Once we identify imbalances, we initiate treatments to restore harmony to your system. Throughout this phase, we monitor progress with follow-up testing every 90 days to ensure steady improvement.
Phase 2: Optimization & Enhancement
Once balanced, we move into optimization—what we call the “Preferred Ranges” phase. Preferred ranges refer to the specific hormone levels that feel best for you as an individual. For example, one man might feel his best with testosterone levels at 900, while another thrives at 1,200. Conversely, some men may find that levels above 800 make them feel overly aggressive.
This phase is where the art of hormone therapy comes into play. While the science lies in achieving optimal levels, the art lies in tailoring these levels to your unique biology and lifestyle preferences.
The Power of Willpower and Testosterone
Willpower is the force that drives us toward our goals and desires. For men, testosterone plays a pivotal role in maintaining that drive. When levels are low, it’s common to feel less motivated or even disconnected from your sense of purpose. With balanced testosterone, men often experience a remarkable transformation—not just in their physical health, but in their mental clarity, determination, and overall quality of life.
At MultiGen Wellness, we’re committed to helping men reclaim their vitality and rediscover their true selves. Hormone therapy is not just a science—it’s an opportunity to optimize your life, physically and mentally.
