South Carolina’s Telemedicine Act and Local Labs
South Carolina’s Telemedicine Act, S.C. Code § 40-47-37, holds telemedicine to the same standard of care as in-person medicine. Physicians must hold a South Carolina license, though they need not live in the state. When care happens only by telemedicine, the law requires an appropriate evaluation before diagnosis or treatment, which need not be in person if the standard of care can be met. It also requires verifying the patient’s identity and location, disclosing the physician’s name, location, and credentials, and making follow-up care available. It bars using telemedicine alone to prescribe when an in-person exam is needed for diagnosis, and it does not allow Schedule II or III narcotic prescriptions by telemedicine outside a few exceptions.
The DEA lists testosterone as a Schedule III non-narcotic. Because testosterone is a controlled substance, federal rules also apply. A temporary DEA and HHS rule allows it to be prescribed by telemedicine without a prior in-person visit through December 31, 2026 (Federal Register). If federal rules change, your provider will tell you what is required.
Physicians and physician assistants are licensed by the South Carolina Board of Medical Examiners, which offers an online licensee lookup. Nurse practitioners (APRNs) are licensed by the South Carolina Board of Nursing. The state’s prescription monitoring program, SCRIPTS, covers Schedule II through IV controlled substances, including mail-order fills shipped into South Carolina.
Labs are spread across the state. Our national lab partner’s location finder lists sites in Columbia, Irmo, Charleston, and Greenville, while another national lab’s directory includes more than 20 cities, among them Florence, Rock Hill, Myrtle Beach, Aiken, and Spartanburg.

Greenville–Spartanburg & the Upstate. A fast-growing region with a health-focused, professional population.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is hormone therapy available in South Carolina?
New-Patient Special: $247 enrollment — includes your first provider visit.
Yes. MultiGen Wellness treats patients across the entire state of South Carolina, including Charleston, Greenville, and Myrtle Beach, all through secure telehealth visits with a licensed provider.
Does insurance, HSA, or FSA cover treatment?
MultiGen Wellness is a self-pay practice. We do not bill insurance and do not accept HSA or FSA cards for services.
Do I need to visit an office in Columbia?
No. Every visit is conducted by telehealth. The only in-person step is a routine lab draw at a national lab location near you in South Carolina — no office visit required.
How soon will I see results?
Many patients report improved energy, mood, and sleep within the first few weeks of treatment, with fuller results typically developing over 2–3 months as hormone levels stabilize.
Will I be asked about my primary care doctor in South Carolina?
Probably, and for good reason. South Carolina’s Telemedicine Act says that, where applicable, physicians who treat patients only by telemedicine should discuss the value of having a primary care medical home and help you find options if you ask. A local primary care doctor can handle physical exams and other health needs that hormone care does not cover. If you have one, tell our team during your consultation.
What has to happen before I get a prescription by telehealth in South Carolina?
South Carolina law requires physicians who practice by telemedicine to perform an appropriate evaluation before any diagnosis or treatment, held to the same standard as an office visit. A physician must also confirm your identity and location and give you their name, location, and credentials. If an in-person physical exam is needed to make a diagnosis, telemedicine alone cannot be used to prescribe. For testosterone, federal rules also apply. A temporary DEA and HHS rule allows it to be prescribed by telemedicine without a prior in-person visit through December 31, 2026 (Federal Register), and your provider will tell you if that changes. For a plain-language walkthrough, read our guide on how to get a TRT prescription online.
Does South Carolina’s telemedicine limit on narcotics apply to testosterone?
No. That limit covers Schedule II and III narcotics, and the DEA lists testosterone as a Schedule III non-narcotic. The same law requires physicians who prescribe controlled substances by telemedicine to hold a South Carolina controlled substances registration with the Bureau of Drug Control, and physicians who practice only by telemedicine must take part in SCRIPTS, the state’s prescription monitoring program. Federal rules also apply: a temporary DEA and HHS rule allows testosterone to be prescribed by telemedicine without a prior in-person visit through December 31, 2026 (Federal Register).
What follow-up care should I expect in South Carolina?
South Carolina’s Telemedicine Act requires physicians who treat patients only by telemedicine to make sure appropriate follow-up care is available. With MultiGen Wellness, follow-up visits are $97 each. At those visits, your provider checks how your symptoms are responding, reviews side effects and new lab results, and decides whether your plan needs to change. Read about TRT side effects so you know what to report.
Where can I get labs in Charleston, Columbia, or Greenville?
Our national lab partner lists patient service centers on Savage Road in Charleston, inside a Walmart on Killian Road in Columbia, in nearby Irmo, and on Roper Mountain Road in Greenville. If you are unsure how to prepare for your draw, ask our team before you go.
