What South Dakota’s Telehealth Law Requires
South Dakota spells out what a telehealth visit must include in SDCL chapter 34-52. Here is what that means for you:
- A real provider-patient relationship. The clinician must verify where you are, share their identity and credentials, get your consent, base a diagnosis on your history, an examination and appropriate lab testing, discuss risks and benefits, arrange follow-up and give you a visit summary.
- Live video when an exam is needed. If the same service in person would call for a face-to-face exam, it must happen by real-time audio and video before diagnosis and treatment.
- No prescriptions from a questionnaire. Without a proper relationship, a controlled drug cannot be prescribed solely from an internet questionnaire or a phone consult. Testosterone is one of those drugs, listed in Schedule III by the DEA, and dispensers must report controlled substance prescriptions for South Dakota patients to the state Prescription Drug Monitoring Program. Prescribers and pharmacists in the state can be granted access to that database to guide prescribing and dispensing decisions.
- Free license checks. The Board of Medical and Osteopathic Examiners Licensee Lookup shows a licensee’s profile and expiration date at no charge. Nurse practitioners can be checked through the South Dakota Board of Nursing verification tool.
Labs. National lab chains have a light footprint here. One national lab’s South Dakota directory lists patient service centers only in Rapid City.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is hormone therapy available in South Dakota?
New-Patient Special: $247 enrollment — includes your first provider visit.
Yes. MultiGen Wellness offers telehealth hormone therapy in South Dakota. Residents of Sioux Falls, Rapid City, Aberdeen, and every other South Dakota community can access our telehealth hormone therapy program.
Does insurance, HSA, or FSA cover treatment?
MultiGen Wellness is a self-pay practice. We do not bill insurance and do not accept HSA or FSA cards for services.
Do I need to visit an office in Pierre?
No. Every visit is conducted by telehealth. The only in-person step is a routine lab draw at a national lab location near you in South Dakota — no office visit required.
How soon will I see results?
Many patients report improved energy, mood, and sleep within the first few weeks of treatment, with fuller results typically developing over 2–3 months as hormone levels stabilize.
Can I start treatment in South Dakota by filling out an online form?
No. Under SDCL 34-52, a controlled drug such as testosterone cannot be prescribed solely from an internet questionnaire without a proper provider-patient relationship. Intake forms still help, because they give your provider your history before you meet. Be wary of any service that offers testosterone after a quick quiz, with no labs and no live visit. Our guide on whether online TRT is safe and legit covers other red flags.
What should my provider explain before I start?
Under South Dakota’s telehealth law, your clinician should tell you who they are and what credentials they hold, explain your diagnosis, and walk you through the risks and benefits of your options. It also helps to bring your own questions: how often you will need labs, which side effects to watch for, and how your dose might change over time. Our overview of TRT side effects is a good place to start.
Where do I get blood work done in South Dakota?
Start by telling our team where you live. Outside Rapid City, national lab chain sites are scarce, so a blood draw may take some planning if you live far from a city. Our care team will confirm a draw site that accepts your lab order before you book. The TRT blood work guide explains which tests are usually included and why.
South Dakota has two time zones. Which one is my visit in?
It is worth checking before you join. Sioux Falls and Aberdeen are on Central time, while Rapid City and much of western South Dakota are on Mountain time. If your phone and your appointment are set to different zones, a visit time can look an hour off. Confirm the time in your own local zone when you book, or call 1-800-259-0015 if anything looks wrong.
Is it safe to start menopause hormone therapy in my 50s?
For many women it can be. The 2022 position statement of The North American Menopause Society (now The Menopause Society) found the benefit-risk balance favorable for women younger than 60, or within 10 years of menopause onset, who have no contraindications, when treating bothersome hot flashes and preventing bone loss. For women who start more than 10 years after menopause onset or after age 60, the balance appears less favorable, so timing is worth discussing. Learn how online menopause treatment works.
